New Media Technology at the Paris 2024 Olympics

The Paris 2024 Olympics is set to be one of the largest ever. The Olympics is one of the most viewed events in the world and is constantly looking to improve viewer experience. This has led them to implement a multitude of new technology in the upcoming games. They are now going to implement cinematic lenses (International Olympic Committee, 1). These cameras have a smaller depth of field, increasing focus on specific details. Access to data has defined the modern age and now viewers are going to be given access to live data detailing the athletes performance. This will come in the form of exciting new graphics, bringing fans even closer to the sport they love. Additionally, they will produce in Ultra HD, allowing viewers to see four times as much detail compared to previous Olympics. All of these new technological innovations on display at the Paris Olympics will give viewers of the Olympics an even more immersive experience. Does this make you more excited for the Olympics? Do you think this level of technology will be brought to other events? If so, what kinds of events?

  1. I think that technology is only growing and evolving, and I believe that technology like this is definitely going to be used at other events. Data science is such a growing field, as businesses and organizations are trying to gain insights from massive data sets to show trends and patterns that make a clearer visualization for the intended audience. Having more exciting graphics on screen paired with data of an athlete's performance this summer at the Olympics, for example, makes the Olympics feel more visual, and really makes it feel like the real deal. You can more easily compare athletes, and it will make the experience more engaging for the viewer. Cameras having a smaller depth of the field will also make viewers feel more connected to the event, and likely make the user feel like they're in Paris watching the games themself, rather than through a TV screen. I'm excited to see what technological advancements will be present at the next World Cup and the next Olympic Games, since they're both going to be in the United States.

    1. Thanks for the comment! I am excited to see how this type of technology is used in other events. Major events like the Super Bowl and World Cup may begin to institute this high level of technology very soon if it works at the Olympics. Your point that these next two events are in the US is important as this may increase the chances this technology gets used again.
